MHFA was designed to be delivered by two instructors, and there are certainly good reasons for this. Many participants will have been touched by mental distress in some way in the past, and some participants can experience some feelings of distress whilst on the course. A second instructor gives more options for managing these situations whilst minimising the disruption to the other participants. However I have yet to have a major problem when delivering alone. Evaluation of the Instructors as well as the course as a whole appears to be independent of whether I have delivered alone or in conjunction with another instructor.
There are advantages and disadvantages over whole days or half days. I have found that for participants, delivery over two whole days is preferable to four half days. However, some organisations prefer four half days for operational reasons. The primary disadvantage of the four half days is that the cost will be higher, as the Instructor is unable to work on the other half of such days.
It may not be possible in some circumstances to offer two instructors for four half days for logistical reasons. This particularly applies to some areas of the country where there are no suitable local Instructors, and therefore arranging travel and accommodation for two people on four separate days may be prohibitive at the prices stated above.
